Introduction to The Rape of Sabine Women

On July 27, 1794 (Thermion 9 for the French Revolution), Thermidorean launched a coup and overthrow the Jacobin dictatorship, and then conducted the brutal suppression for opponents. Robespierre was sent to the guillotine, and the painter David who joined in the Jacobin was also jailed because of 17 counts and nearly suffered from fatal disaster. After coming out of prison, he secluded and stopped all the political activities. Aside from association with some artists, he usually taught students in the studio. The draft of The Rape of Sabine Women had been idle in the studio for the entire period of the great revolution. At that time he took it out for new processing. David changed the composition made in 1789 and finally completed it until 1799.
